What is Laminated Glass?
Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered. In the event of breaking, it is held in place by a thin polymer interlayer, typically of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), tonoplast polymers(SGP) between its two or more layers of glass. The interlayer, made through heat and pressure, keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, and its high strength prevents the glass from breaking up into large and sharp pieces. This produces a characteristic “spider web” cracking pattern when the impact is not enough to completely pierce the glass. The thermoset EVA offers a complete bounding (cross-linking) with the material.
Laminated Glass or Tempered Glass?
When it comes to safety glass, two commonly used choices are laminated glass and tempered glass.
Laminated glass is made of multiple layers of glass together with a PVB interlayer. On the other hand, tempered glass is significantly stronger than laminated glass and more resistant to breakage and heat, boasting approximately five times the strength.
However, the key difference lies in how these glasses break upon impact. Tempered glass shatters into small, rough-edged, round pieces usually instead of large, hazardous shards due to its heat treatment process. In contrast, laminated glass utilizes the PVB interlayer to keep the broken glass fragments intact, forming a pattern resembling a spider web. This design enhances safety and minimizes the risk of injuries.
Custom Laminated Glass Application

- Automotive Glass: Laminated glass finds extensive use in car windshields due to its exceptional strength and safety advantages.
- Storefronts: Laminated glass offers enhanced security against intruders and serves as a protective barrier during natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes.
- Skylights: Incorporating laminated glass in skylights ensures protection against breakage, UV radiation, and various weather conditions.
- Sliding Doors: Laminated glass provides an added layer of aesthetics to the home interiors and safeguards against breakage when utilized in sliding doors.
- Glass Railings: Laminated glass used in glass railings not only offers safety benefits for outdoor areas but also protects against breakage and strong winds.
- Display Cases: Laminated glass is an ideal choice for display cases as It provides a protective shield, safeguarding valuable items from damage and deterring theft.
- Shower Enclosures: Laminated glass in shower enclosures are less prone to breaking into sharp fragments if shattered, delivering a safer showering experience.
Is custom laminated glass right for me?
Custom laminated glass can be a great option for your interior design thanks to its safety features. They are ideal for areas that require additional protection from impact, such as near stairwells and walkways. Additionally, custom laminated glass can offer increased sound insulation and UV protection when compared to conventional single-pane windows.
Where is custom laminated glass most used?
Decorative laminated glass panels are most often integrated into the building facades, indoor partitions, screens, ceilings, walls, balconies, and corridors amongst other areas. They can be used both indoors and outdoors, and are a popular option for settings like airports, hotels, office buildings, shopping malls, and private residences amongst others.
How can I protect the quality of my glass?
Store your custom laminated glass in a moisture-proof warehouse that is protected from sunlight before installation and transport them in open-top containers. It’s also best to use booms for loading and unloading, and you should avoid using acid glass glue during installation. Clean and maintain your decorative laminated glass panel regularly using low-concentration alcohol or professional glass cleaners.
